Building homes for Habitat alongside CenturyLink

Sioux Falls, SD-Voyage Federal Credit Union, along with friends and family members of their business partner CenturyLink, came together last week to build homes for Habitat For Humanity. This is the fourth year for

the “Dream Team” that consists of 6 business partners of the credit union taking on 6 months of builds.

During the third week of July, the weather had been a blistering 96 degrees with very high humidity. Paul, the construction manager for Habitat, decided it was best for everyone to move the build inside to the recently constructed annex attached to the Habitat Restore. The annex gives both a relief from summer heat and an interior space for year round construction.

At 5:00 p.m., CenturyLink and Voyage FCU employees showed up and received their work instructions. For many of the crew that night this was a familiar routine, as there were many returning volunteers who were able to bring experience as well as enthusiasm. The crew was also grateful to get dinner donated by Orion Foods-not only pizza but giant cookies!

The switch to interior work meant that insulation was the task for the evening. Luckily the volunteers had plenty of time to change into appropriate itch-resistant clothing! Wednesday night was wrapped up early because all of the possible tasks had already been completed. The crew was happy not only to have completed a great deal of work, but to have some time to cool off indoors together.

Saturday’s weather was much cooler but unfortunately for the full crew that showed up we were greeted by rain that had started the night before and had already soaked the build site. We all stood and spoke with Paul again about what options we had available, especially since we had already finished any indoor tasks during the Wednesday’s build. Eventually Paul called the build, thanked everyone, and sent us home. The decision was based on the soft wet ground, which would have meant that any work we could have done would have also resulted in hours worth of clean up. Even though the weather gave us some trouble on Saturday it was still a wonderful and productive week! We met new people, introduced more volunteers to Habitat, and were able to introduce new skills!
