Habitat Build with Orion Foods
Posted Jul 02, 2015
Last week we built for Habitat with our Orion partners and volunteers from the Habitat restore. Upon arriving, we gathered around the pizza and cookies donated by Orion and introduced ourselves. As we were munching, Scott, our foreman introduced the other supervisors and explained what we would be doing for the evening.
Our first task was framing out a couple walls and organizing
our wood. Afterwards, we were all given hammers and had to put up the plywood. The task sounded easy enough but after hammering a couple dozen nails, your arms start to feel more like jelly than an arm. The entire area sounded like a drum line but with a very strange beat! Regardless, of our arms being tired or the ruckus in our ears, we all stayed a little later to go over our work and make sure that we hadn’t missed any areas that needed nails.
Saturday Morning was also a lot of fun too! We were lucky again with a gorgeous day and another full crew. However, this time there was an additional team and multiple supervisors on site. Our crew would be in two spots that morning; one crew would build, mount and brace framing. The other part of the crew would be by the power tools to measure, cut, and clean up the site. Since we weren’t too experienced in the terminology of construction we were having a blast coming up with words for various processes and tools like, “flubber- mitigating” and “dyed” nails. When we weren’t discussing our lack of building knowledge, we were having fun teasing each other and just like that, the time passed and we were done!
Thank you to all the volunteers from Orion, Habitat, Voyage and friends that came out to build homes for the 3rd year in a row!
