#Letsfindaway to Build Homes with Habitat
Posted Aug 22, 2014
Arriving at the jobsite last night, the rain was still dropping pretty well on my windshield and not showing any signs of letting up. Luckily, one of the homes had a completed garage that was dry and even had a clean set of scaffolding to use as a dinner table. I gathered a couple of the other volunteers to help set out the pizza and cookies that Orion had graciously donated and wheeled the water and other supplies into the area. As we ate, we watched the sky and wished for the rain to let up. Thankfully, it did.
The slight sprinkle that remained after we got finished eating actually cooled us as we began to work. Our mission: haul, hang, nail and brace a couple dozen trusses into two houses. By the time we got them brought inside and in place it stopped raining and set the night off to a great start. Luckily, we had a couple of people with quite a bit of experience leading us, a few others with confidence, ones that kept the night entertaining, but most importantly, EVERYONE was eager to help! The scaffolding was slippery and the nails wouldn’t cooperate but lots of fun was had and no one was hurt! We even had the pleasure of meeting and working alongside Adane, who is one of the_ individuals that will be moving into the first house we worked on.
Thank you to our fearless leaders from Habitat, the donations of yummy substance from Orion Foods and the great big crew of volunteers from Avera Hospital that came out to help build in the rain!
