Voyage FCU Visits the 605 Summer Classic
Posted Jul 10, 2015
With glow sticks and bubbles in tow, Voyage Federal Credit Union (FCU) made its first appearance at the 605 Summer Classic in downtown Sioux Falls in June. It was great community exposure for our staff, and we had a wonderful time engaging the attendees. Plus, those bubbles came in handy in helping the kids take their minds off the heat.
Thankfully there was a diverse variety of wonderful food and beer available – and even better, the prices were decent. Plus, the space at Cherapa Place was ideal – it was large enough to give vendors such as us the space to avoid being crammed close together but we were close enough to the stage to feel included and speak with those in attendance. And the view sure didn’t hurt either – the riverfront and the weather worked out perfectly!
We had some exciting neighbors for the day, as well. Local non-profit JAM Art & Supplies worked on crafts for the kids, while the Roller Dollz worked a dunk tank to raise money for JAM. We couldn’t have asked for better placement than being next-door to this crew! We took dozens of photos of passersby with our mannequin, sporting sunglasses from the nearby Lloyd Properties booth, and people really embraced our “LetsFindaWay” hashtag. (That Apple Watch at stake probably didn’t hurt!)
What We Learned
As it turns out, many people don’t know much about credit unions in general – in fact, many think that cities are only allowed to have one. But once they found out credit unions offer many of the same comprehensive products and services as a bank, the fact that credit unions are local and member-owned was definitely appealing.
Plus, this proved a perfect opportunity to get feedback on our “stiff” banker marketing – people were quick to tell us they love seeing the fun billboards around town. Overall, there seemed to be quite a few people that have noticed Voyage FCU over the past year and that have positive feelings toward Voyage and credit unions in general, citing our community efforts through Facebook, as well as our presence in the Argus Leader and on Twitter.
“Newcomers to the area want a financial institution that is there for them with quality recommendations, support for the community and pressure-free discussion of financial needs,” one Voyage FCU staff member said. “A credit union fits perfectly – and as a credit union member, you can be part-owner.”
All in all, the 605 Summer Classic was a great opportunity for us to get face-to-face interactions with community members – so here’s to many happy returns!
